Hi, I'm new. I've been playing guitar for about half a year right now and I'm not really sure what I need to be learning or how I should practice. I read the articles on here and I'm still not sure what to do. My teacher taught me the major and minor scale forms, sweep picking and then a bunch of riffs. Is that how I should be practicing?

I've been playing since january and my teacher always add's in some songs that feature whatever it is we've been working on - it's a great way to break up the learning and the whole point of learning an instrument is to be able to play something.

A song is much more impressive to people who aren't musical than an A minor pentatonic scale - or any other scale!! There's a whole bunch of songs out there that only use 3 or 4 chords as well.

Maybe try that for a while?

EDIT:

Welcome aboard by the way Jing! Feel free to ask whatever you're not sure of!

Are you still with your teacher?

Because if you are not... I think you should go to the home page(http://www.blackbeltguitar.com/) and on the left, under the "Free Belt Level Lessons" Section, select the "White Belt Guitar Lessons" and read all of the lessons, if you know everything in that page, go to the next level... and read all the lessons from that level... and go adding every knowledge you acquired to your playing and practice everything you know and everything that you learn everyday.

In case you are with a teacher... you can do the things i mentioned above... or just might as well ask him for help biggrin.gif

When I have had students in the past, I would kindof see where they were and then recommend a few of the books on this page. I would give them homework from the books, and then we would always spend at least half the lesson jamming together, often with a metronome or drum machine to instill the rhythm (the most neglected part for beginners, I feel).

Regards,

Craig

Well as well as learing, I think you should focus on your favourite type of music and just learn songs from your favourite bands or guitarists. I'm primarily a metal and prog player, so when I'm not learning theory and scales ect I go and listen to a song and even if I think its too ahrd I give it a go until I can produce something that sounds similar to the original at least.

+1 Benjabob! gotta mix it up and play stuff you like. What's the point in playing if you don't like it right?!?!
